Shortly after getting up this morning, Luke announced that he had to pooh. Karen hopefully asked, “Do you want to pooh in the bathroom?”
“No, I’m going to my pooh spot. Can you turn on the light in my pooh spot, please?”
Ugh, the joys of potty-training (or lack thereof). Luke has cruised right on by his third birthday (and then some) showing little to no interest in using the bathroom.
That’s not to say he isn’t particular about where he poohs. When he’s at home, he nearly always poohs in the dining room, his ‘pooh spot.’ (More specifically, under the dining room table.)
For a couple of days, his pooh time had shifted to right around dinner, and so his pooh spot shifted to under the kitchen table. One second, he’d be eating his meal, the next second, he’d be excusing himself and slipping under the table for a bowel movement.
He definitely prefers to move his bowels in privacy. (Which I presume is why he likes to pooh under tables.) If we attempt to approach him or even talk to him, he’ll put up his hand (often grimacing), and say, “Stay away – I’m poohing!” or “I need some privacy.” Once or twice, he decided to just pooh in the room where we were all playing. He declared that he was poohing and needed his privacy. Apparently, he expected us to evacuate the room so he could pooh in private.
A couple of weeks ago, when he and Karen were running some errands, he had to go when they were in Target. For whatever reason, he decided that he would pooh in the home/garden section among the patio furniture. It worked out well – he propped himself up against one of the tables, and Karen was able to relax on one of the couches.
A few days later, I took the kids back to Target to pick up something. When we rounded a corner and the home/garden section came into view across the store, he pointed excitedly and said, “Dad, there’s my pooh spot!” He took off, half running and half skipping, to show me exactly where he poohed. (I think he attempted to go again, but he simply didn’t have to at the time.) The next week, when he had to go while at Walmart, he again found the home/garden section.
Hopefully, one day (preferably one day soon), he will recognize the bathroom as his rightful pooh spot. But until then, I suppose the home/garden section is a good a place as any other.
I hope you enjoyed today’s serving of ‘mac & cheese.’

Even though I lived it, it still got me laughing a smiling at the memory.
Just yesterday Luke found a new “pooh spot” in the tunnel at the playground. Luckily we were the only ones there, so his bowels did not effect any other’s play time. Although I look forward to his potty-training being complete, looking on the positive side, it is nice for all of us that he can go whenever and whereever he wants.
