Ok, we’re getting a little concerned. Luke is almost three and half and has expressed little to no interest in potty training. Earlier this week, he maintained that big boys do, in fact, wear diapers.
We thought we made a breakthrough a month or two ago when Luke agreed to try. He stood over the toilet for a good 10 to 15 minutes (an eternity for a three-year old). Granted, Karen helped hold his interest (while he held his ‘interest’) by putting Tasteeos (generic Cheerios) in the toilet water as targets. He kept requesting more until it looked like a bowl full of cereal. Strike that, it was a bowl full of cereal.
But after 10 minutes had passed, still no pee. He asked to go get a book (Charlotte’s a big reader when she’s in the bathroom). And when he went to get a book from the living room, sans diaper, that’s when he peed – in the living room, on the aforementioned book.
We also thought we made a breakthrough this Wednesday when Luke agreed to try again, at his mother’s urging. Karen practically throws a party for him in there. Books, cereal, she even adds blue food coloring to the water so he can try to make it green (you know, because yellow and blue make green).
After about 15 minutes, her efforts were rewarded with Luke peeing in the toilet. Hallelujah, hallelujah! There was much rejoicing in the Putney house. Luke got several treats (including chocolate) and got to pick lunch. I was out of the house but was immediately called so Luke could tell me of his triumph.
He definitely prefers to stand – he doesn’t like to sit because “it hurts.” We got him a new toilet seat (Lightning McQueen, with a padded seat that seams a little bigger than the one we have) in an effort to build excitement and to get him to sit. Dropping a deuce froma standing position isn’t really an option.
He also made a good effort two more times that day, but to no avail. He’ll stand above the toilet or potty, holding his penis, occasionally tensing up (at one point, passing gas) and saying, “It’s coming.” (But they’ve been false calls.)
Unfortunately, he seems to have lost interest in potty training, yet again. He hasn’t really tried since.
I hope you enjoyed today’s serving of ‘mac & cheese.’
